Starting pitcher drafted by Boston Red Sox
By: Sergio Bonilla / Sports Director Starting pitcher Tom Ebert was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 19th round (588th) of the 2009 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft on June 10. Ebert joins former outfielder/first baseman Tyler Townsend (third round, Baltimore Orioles) as the second Golden Panther drafted thus far. Last season was Ebert’s first year in a Golden Panthers uniform. The 6-foot-6 right-hander went 6-5 with a 4.39 ERA, striking out 84 batters, and he walked 18 in 80 innings. Townsend drafted by Orioles, not returning to FIU
By: Sergio Bonilla / Sports Director Outfielder Tyler Townsend was drafted in the third round (85th overall) of the 2009 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft by the Baltimore Orioles on June 9. Although he has not worked out a contract agreement, Townsend said he will not return to play for the Golden Panthers next season and will sign the minor league contract. “I’m a 100 percent sure that I will sign with the Baltimore Orioles,” Townsend said in a phone interview with Student Media on June 10.
