Anime club’s president to face trial for altercation

Pedro Cortes, who was elected president of the club September 2008, was placed in custody after Public Safety was called to the club’s Winter Masquerade event on Nov. 6. The victim, Carla Slon, AGA director of public relations, was giving a speech in the Graham Center Ballrooms at the time of the incident. Dean of law school on top 100 most influential Hispanics list
By: Melissa Caceres / Staff Writer Four months into his tenure, the dean of the College of Law at FIU has been recognized as one of the 100 most influential Hispanics in the nation. R. College of Education receives $496,00 grant for research program
By: Alexander Miller / Staff Writer In an effort to develop model retention programs for minority students in higher education, the College of Education has been awarded $496,000 to fund three years of research. The University received the Lumina Foundation grant on Nov. 2 to observe the University’s strengths and weaknesses and to improve the programs it offers students. FIU graduates more Hispanic students than any other institution in the nation. Perfection: Volleyball goes undefeated in conference play
By: Sergio Bonilla / Sports Director The Golden Panthers volleyball team (28-2) finished the season undefeated vs. Sun Belt Conference opponents by defeating Florida Atlantic 3-0 on Nov. 14. This is the first time in program’s history the team goes undefeated vs. Sun Belt teams. It was also the 22nd consecutive win for the Golden Panthers. They have not lost since September. Football overcomes 14-point deficit to win homecoming game
By: Sergio Bonilla / Sports Director The Golden Panthers (3-7, Sun Belt 3-4) football team overcame a 28-14 deficit to defeat the North Texas Mean Green (2-8, Sun Belt 1-6) 35-28 on Nov. 13. They scored 21 unanswered points in the second half with quarterback Wayne Younger scoring the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter. Defensive back Peter Riley returned an interception for a touchdown and the special teams blocked a punt which led to a touchdown as well.
