As Garrett Wittels continues to close in on the all-time hit streak record that has stood for 23 years, the accolades and honors continue to land at his feet as his dream season continues farther into the postseason.

Now, on the eve of the NCAA Regionals, he add All-American to his distinctions.

The FIU infielder was named to the Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I All-American First Team on June 3, becoming the second Golden Panther in as many seasons to earn All-American status. Former FIU outfielder Tyler Townsend was named to the squad after the conclusion of the 2009 season.

“It’s a great honor to be named an All-American,” Wittels told FIUSports.com. “This award is a team effort and wouldn’t be possible without my teammates, no question. While individual awards are great, we’re not finished and we want to go out there and advance past this regional and move on into the playoffs.”

The Golden Panther has already been named the Sun Belt Player of the Year and was also a part of the Sun Belt All-Tournament team for his performance during FIU’s Sun Belt Championship run.

“It’s a great honor for Garrett and our baseball program to have a First-Team All-American,” FIU head coach Turtle Thomas said.

Wittels, who enters the opening game of the Coral Gables Regional against Texas A&M with a 54-game hitting streak, holds a .412 batting average and has knocked in a team-high 58 RBI so far this season.
