Detailed Fun Fact: Perspective Records
Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis started Flyte Tyme Productions in 1982. Seven years later, they created Perspective Records. A spinoff of the production company, this was a joint venture between A&M Records and Flyte Tyme Productions. In addition to signing Mint Condition (Who was seen by the two producers at First Avene and 7^th Street Entry), The Sounds of Blackness also signed with the label. After being approached by Janet Jackson to hear the St. Paul,MN-based ensemble (and it’s ten piece orchestra), Jam & Lewis Signed the Sounds Of Blackness, and allowed them to still maintain their defined sound of performing many forms of Black Music, as well as gospel music. Prior to the deal with Perspective, The SOB was offered Major record deals under circumstances from the labels. Whether being pigeonholed to one genre or changing their name, that is the only way the SOB could get a deal. Perspective allowed them to perform whichever form of music they wanted, and produce most of the album (Jam & Lewis co produced tunes on the first two albums issued on the label). Other well known signees were Lo-Key, Smooth, 4.0, Bobby Ross Avila and a few others. A&M Co-Founder Herb Alpert previously worked with Jam & Lewis on his highly-anticipated 1987 LP “Keep Your Eye On Me”. The two produced a substantial portion of songs on the album, including the title track. This led to ultimately having the Perspective label. And, that same year the label formed, A&M went in the process of being under the PolyGram company, which was absored into Universal Music Group alongside MCA. Overall, Perspective (Alongside Uptown, LaFace, So So Def, and Bad Boy) was a premier 1990s record label in Urban Music distributed by a major record company.
