Volleyball team back home with fourth win of season

The women’s volleyball team had its first successful stretch of three-match weekend invitationals this season, going 2-1 in the Best Western Osprey Invite against Nicholls State University, Mercer University and the University of North Florida. 

The Panthers started the invite on Friday defeating Nicholls State 3-1. Although they lost the first set 16-25, they proceeded to win the next three sets, 25-17, 25-21 and 26-24, respectively. Senior Katie Hogan accomplished her second “double-double” of the season with 11 kills and 13 digs in this match. Junior Tajia Thomas finished with a team-leading 13 kills while also accruing five digs. Junior Mariana De Paula Silva racked up 36 assists to go along with five digs.

The only loss the Panthers had during the Best Western Osprey Invite was on Saturday against the Mercer Bears, where they lost 3-0, (18-25, 19-25, 20-25). Hogan put together another double-double performance with 14 kills and 11 digs while redshirt freshman Lina Bernier had nine kills and four digs. Junior Mariana De Paula Silva finished with 29 assists and seven digs.

The Panthers continued their streak of capping off three-game weekends by winning their last of the three after defeating the North Florida Ospreys 3-1. They started off the game in a weak fashion, losing the first set 13-25 before winning the next three sets, which they won 25-21, 25-19 and 25-20, respectively. Junior Jennifer Ene finished with seven kills, one dig, and 10 block assists.

Silva showed out with nine kills and seven digs. Hogan and Bernier both finished with seven kills. Hogan had eight digs and four block assists while Bernier had six digs and two block assists.

The team will be back in action after they fly out to Starkville, Mississippi for the Maroon Classic hosted by Mississippi State University from Sept. 16 to Sept. 17. The Panthers will face Mississippi State first, followed by Eastern Illinois University, University of Portland and Troy University to finish up the weekend.
